The network team designs, implements, and supports the network infrastructure for Wolverine’s proprietary real-time trading systems including proprietary hardware platforms with a focus on low latency. Network performance and redundancy are critical to the success of the global trading operation. The network engineer will be part of a team that works with Wolverine’s software engineers and traders to satisfy the high availability of the electronic trading infrastructure.


The candidate is expected to be local in the Metropolitan Chicago area.  The candidate will have about a 50/50 mix of working from home and working in the office at 175 W. Jackson Blvd., Chicago.


This position will also be expected to travel locally to Chicago area data centers when necessary

What You'll Do:

  • Design, engineer, implement low-latency network solutions based on requirements from business stakeholders
  • Own and manage strategic projects to implement and optimize low latency, high-performance network solutions at and between various data center locations
  • Work with financial exchanges, brokers, and banks to implement network connectivity in shared colocation facilities
  • Carry out high-level analysis and troubleshooting of the network infrastructure
  • Respond to network requests, troubleshoot network failures to diagnose, isolate and resolve complex problems ensuring timely results and minimal disruption of operations
  • Perform network maintenance and system upgrades including patches and hotfixes to address vendor bugs and vulnerabilities
  • Monitor system resource utilization, historical trends, and perform capacity planning
  • Provide technical knowledge needed to ensure safe, effective, and efficient changes to the network infrastructure
  • Participate in team on-call rotation cycle

What We're Looking For:

  • Minimum of 4 years in a technical networking environment as a network engineer
  • Hands-on knowledge and experience of complex network designs and principles, L2 switching, dynamic routing (OSPF, BGP, EIGRP), firewalling (ASA, PaloAlto), and VPN (Site-to-Site IPSec)
  • Extensive knowledge of network operating systems (IOS / NX-OS / EOS / PANOS based network devices)
  • Solid knowledge of multicast and real-time exchange market data feeds
  • Ability to troubleshoot network latency and packet drop issues
  • Hands-on experience with network monitoring, diagnostic, analytics tools, and automation.  Understanding of and experience with Python and Ansible is a plus
  • Experience with physical planning, implementing, and supporting space, power, and structured cabling within a data center environment
  • Experience with troubleshooting fiber optic connectivity in and between data center locations is a plus
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills will be needed as you collaborate with colleagues across the firm
  • Experience working with financial exchanges, brokers, and banks is a plus

Bonus Points:

  • Experience with Linux Shell utilities
  • Understanding of network time synchronization protocols
  • Experience with databases and big data tools (i.e MySQL, Splunk, InfluxDB, Grafana)
  • Hands-on experience with cloud services (AWS, GCP)

    Base salary is $120,000-$160,000. Base salary is only one part of Wolverine Trading total compensation, which includes an annual discretionary bonus.
