The Opportunity

The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub – Chicago is seeking an outstanding R&D Engineer to join our team and contribute to our mission of deciphering fundamental disease mechanisms and developing technologies for actionable diagnostics and effective therapies. This position focuses on an effort to develop implantable sensors for real-time inflammation monitoring. Candidates should have a demonstrated track record of achievement and a commitment to work collaboratively in a highly interdisciplinary environment.

What You'll Do

  • Lead efforts to develop the mechanical design of an implantable sensors for real-time physiological monitoring
  • Work with team members to demonstrate device integration and function
  • Collaborate with other Biohub teams to integrate technologies into research workflows
  • Engage in scientific communication, including publication of findings and research products

You have 

Essential -

  • Masters or PhD in a relevant discipline
  • Demonstrated leadership, track record of innovation, and ability to work collaboratively
  • > 5 years experience, ideally in an industrial setting
  • Knowledge of:
    • Design and fabrication of microneedle-based sensor systems
    • Experience with 3D printing, and micro-molding (e.g., biocompatible polymers)
    • Wearable medical device engineering
    • Form factor design for comfort, biocompatibility, and skin-contact stability
    • Expertise in CAD/CAM tools (Fusion 360, SolidWorks, COMSOL)
    • Design of modular systems with disposable and reusable components
    • Assembly process development with a focus on sealing, alignment, and mechanical robustness
    • Familiarity with mechanical testing protocols (compression, wear-and-tear, skin insertion force)
  • Proven ability to lead complex research projects

Compensation

The Chicago, IL base pay ranges for this role are R&D Engineer I = $68,000.00 -  $93,500.00 and R&D Engineer II = $80,000.00 to $110,000.00. New hires are typically hired into the lower portion of the range, enabling employee growth in the range over time. Actual placement in range is based on job-related skills and experience, as evaluated throughout the interview process.
